Designed for Driving Safety

The use of mobile phones while driving a car is a major cause of accidents. Operating Bluetooth or Voice control is make driving more safe and efficient, it helps the driver to concentrate on the road.

PROBLEM

The driver uses voice recognition for safe driving and keep eyes forward. However, due to interface and functional error of the voice recognition systems, the driver watches or uses the mobile phone unnecessarily.

DESIGN PROCESS

PRODUCT GOALS

The driver need to provided the necessary information without touch the mobile phone and lead to concentrate on the road condition. It should be easy to operate speech recognition, such as music selection, email processing, dialing, and set destination when they are driving. The driver should feel lightly conversation with the passenger.

PRIMARY RESEARCH

  • The existing speech recognition patterns are need to confirms the user 's command by text or touch the phone.

  • If the command is uncertain or the voice recognition error continues, the system will send an error message, or display the search results to the user, and user need to feedback by read, find, select and touch in manually.

  1. Voice recognition using Push to talk ( PTT)
  2. Motion recognition
  3. Touch screen input mode

  • Existing speech recognition requires user adapt to speech recognition, and additional practice is required to obtain accurate results.

SECONDARY RESEARCH

Bluetooth device and Hands-free device actual influence while driving.

  • Talking on a hands-free phone was more distracting than talking to a passenger. Many functions in the mobile phone due to technological advances, that makes decrease the drivers concentration and the interface is inappropriate.

PERSONA

User research is about understanding the needs, behaviors and motivations of the user through observation and feedback. Three major driving environmental representation of different type of app used while driving. I was interviewed three different users by phone and onsite, also these people proceed to online survey to understand their driving style.

DRIVER INTERVIEW

"Passengers boarding and drop off location is not accurate as well, so basically one or two map applications are used at the same time"

"I have to use my mobile phone because I have to answer the text message or phone call from client"

"I was missed the right turn while driving with holding phone. I always consider purchasing phone cradle.

BEHAVIORAL VARIABLES

In order to analyze driver's driving information, driving style, career and driving pattern in unexpected variables. Driving behavior was analyzed by 10 drivers in different environments.

What points are inconvenient and bring additional manipulate phone?

Most driver had bluetooth function but they are not used to use because, the bluetooth is hard to connect every time, very distracting, recognition error and very frustrating to use.

Why drivers keep watching mobile phone?

People can speak faster than they type, but can listen much more slowly than they can read. The displays for delivering information that direct influence on the amount of unsuitable for audio due to its length.

What’s the use case for their app?

Most of drivers use music apps while driving. However, Uber and lyft drivers were frequently used to their app (Uber, Lyft) with google map for pick up and drop the passenger.

VOICE USER INTERFACE (VUI) DESIGN

The voice errors, scant information, repeated voice rejection from driver, and voice tone increasing. The voice prompts that driver can easily to get desired information. Therefore, the driver does not have to operate or view the mobile phone for double check voice recognition condition.

USER CONVERSATION PATTERN

When driver conversation with passenger is something that participate in naturally without being conscious. Most conversation don’t think of the rules of grammar. Driver don’t think of everything required to understand, interpret, and respond.

"Driver just speak, but driver don’t have to think about voice controls systems"

pattern.jpg

The voice recognition systems has fixed time limit of voice record. So, as soon as the voice ends, it starts searching immediately. So, if the driver can afford to say the desired information or function, the driver will be able to more focus on the driving.

VUI SYSTEM FLOW

Voice user interface is not only affected by the objective limitations of a voice recognition, but human factors play a decisive role: auditive and orientation capabilities, attention, clarity, diction, speed, pronounce and ambient noise. Speech is not recognized with an accuracy of 100%. Even humans are not able to do that.

VUI-08.jpg

Voice controlled listening is controlled by the short term memory. Listening to long utterances has the effect that users forget most of the information that was given at the beginning. But, because of this property, speech is ideal to deliver information without forcing the user to switch context.

FLEXIBILITY vs ACCURACY

When the driver has enough time to speak the desired information or function. The system will analyze by primary vocabulary and words patterns from the users. The VUI can delivery the accurate information to drivers.

SOLUTION

Remove or modify unnecessary functions for the driver. Remove the function that verifies speech recognition as text. (Replaced by voice)

Use the new VUI design pattern. If the driver's command repeats the continuing error, Analyzes the conversation pattern and gives the driver new options with some words the driver has said
